The Electro-Optics and Photonics Department at University of Dayton seeks a postdoctoral research scholar to join a collaborative project on optical turbulence. This project will provide a better understanding of optical wave propagation in deep turbulence and long-range (order of ~100 km) atmospheric paths. The outcomes of this project will have implications for a variety of fields, including laser communications, remote sensing and imaging applications. Anticipated areas of responsibility for the postdoctoral research scholar include: (1) performing state-of- the-art simulations of optical turbulence, (2) analyzing a diverse suite of observational datasets (e.g., scintillometer, thermosonde), (3) developing new methodologies for the estimation of the refractive index structure parameter (Cn2) from modeled data, (4) presenting research results at various meetings, conferences, and workshops, (5) publishing in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals, and (6) mentoring graduate students working on the same project. In addition, the postdoctoral research scholar is expected to interact with professors, scientists, and students in the University of Dayton Electro-Optics and Photonics Department, and with peer research groups in government, industry, and academic laboratories.

Minimum Qualifications

Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate in atmospheric science, optics, or a closely related field; in-depth understanding of boundary-layer meteorology and atmospheric turbulence; extensive experience with wave-optics simulations; strong communication skills; and ability to work productively in a research team. The postdoctoral research scholar should have a track record of quality publications in international research journals.

Preferred Qualifications

Some understanding of direct numerical and wave-optics simulation; familiarity with computational fluid dynamics codes (e.g., FLUENT, OpenFOAM); coding experience with C#; and working knowledge of parallel computing and volume visualization.
