POSITION SUMMARY

This position is being funded by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research for work completed in the Aerospace Systems Directorate of the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base through the University of Dayton Research Institute.

The Research Engineer will work closely with a group of PhD-level experts in computational structural mechanics and fluid dynamics, smart materials and structures, and topology optimization.

This position seeks to develop a multi-physics computational framework to evaluate lessons learned from the study of biological systems, actuator or mechanism concepts from developing active materials, compliant joints, or other biological structures in an engineering context across multiple scales. An optimization methodology based on cellular division and biological growth will be used to explore a large design space of possible concepts. Scaling laws based on size, weight, wing loading, actuator force output, and other metrics will be studied and pursued to understand how biological concepts can be applied to large-scale flight vehicles.

The successful candidates will be classified as either Professional Research Category 1 (P1) or Professional Research Category 2 (P2) employees based on expertise and experience.

P1 Research Engineers at the University of Dayton Research Institute are expected to apply their academic training to assignments under the guidance of senior-level professionals. They assist other researchers in performing professional-level assignments that require the use of the fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of their discipline. They assist in planning and conducting experiments, design, and/or analysis efforts. They construct, operate, and maintain apparatus used in experiments. They assist and perform data acquisition, analysis, and interpretation. They assist in various stages of report preparation, support overall marketing efforts, and train student assistants in the operation of apparatus used for experiments. They review and follow applicable safety and security procedures and recommend travel and expenditures.

Supervisor or more senior-level professionals screen assignments for unusual or difficult problems, provide instructions and suggestions for their solution, and review work of P1 Research Engineers for thoroughness and accuracy.

P1 Research Engineers demonstrate initiative, display creativity, seek assistance from others, and may direct the activities of student assistants or technicians.

P2 Research Engineers at the University of Dayton Research Institute are expected to demonstrate the ability to generate ideas, solve problems, and contribute to the preparation of technical documents, and may be expected to secure funds to support themselves.

P2 Research Engineers conduct professional-level assignments that require the use of fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of their discipline or specialty. They prepare plans for and conduct experiments, design, and/or analysis efforts. They specify apparatus to be used and procured for experiments. They perform data acquisition, analysis, and interpretation. They train other professionals and student assistants, organize experimental and/or technical results, prepare reports, and develop an awareness of technology and funding trends.

P2 Research Engineers contribute to proposal and other marketing efforts. They supervise hands-on training of students, technicians, and entry-level professionals. They implement safety and security procedures and endorse travel and expenditures.

P2 Research Engineers perform the majority of duties independently receiving technical guidance on unusual or complex problems and supervisory approval on proposed plans and projects. They demonstrate initiative, resourcefulness, and ingenuity in performing assigned duties and may be responsible for the supervision and training of less-experienced employees.

United State citizenship is preferred.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor’s or equivalent degree in an engineering discipline, or related field (P1 & P2)
• A minimum of 3 years of directly related experience in engineering research is required for P2 classification (PhD counts as ½ time up to 2 years)(no experience required for P1 classification)

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced degree in an engineering discipline, or related field
• The candidate must have strong technical writing, English verbal, organization, and presentation skills
• The candidate should be able to interact effectively with other engineers, technicians, and management as well as with current and potential customers
• The candidate should have successful experience or interest in one or more of the following:
1) Computational structural mechanics
2) Fluid dynamics
3) Smart materials and structures
4) Topology optimization
5) Numerical methods and scientific programming (C,C++,Fortran)
6) Bio-inspired system design methods
7) Morphing aerospace structures design
8) Multi-physics computational frameworks
9) Actuator or mechanism concepts for developing active materials, compliant joints, or other bio-inspired structures
10) Optimization methodologies based on a genetic programming approach providing a formalism for the growth and evolution of branched and cellular structures
11) Scaling laws based on size, weight, wing loading, actuator force output, and other metrics
