POSITION SUMMARY

The research engineer position will provide engineering and testing support for set-up, operation, and maintenance of the Air Force Research Laboratory’s wind tunnel complex, and for the experiments conducted therein. Candidates will apply fundamental engineering principals for aerodynamic, structural, mechanical, material, thermal, electrical, and/or systems integration that will advance the state-of-the-art in aerospace vehicle concepts and technology via advanced wind tunnel experiments.
These positions are for a contracted effort and are contingent upon receipt of a contract award.
Start date for these positions are contingent upon receipt of funding from the customer.

Minimum Qualifications

• P2: A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent degree in mechanical, aerospace, or electrical engineering, or related field, plus a minimum of 3 years directly related experience in wind tunnel experimentation and operation is required.
• P3: A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent degree in mechanical, aerospace, or electrical engineering, or related field, plus a minimum of 8 years directly related experience in wind tunnel experimentation and operation is required.
• Due to the security clearance requirements of these positions, all candidates must be U.S. Citizens and pass a National Agency Check.

Preferred Qualifications

• Strong organizational skills
• The candidates should be able to interact effectively with other engineers, technicians, and management as well as with current and potential customers
• Successful experience using, supporting, and/or maintaining the AFRL wind tunnels, such as the Subsonic Aerodynamic Research Laboratory, Tri-Sonic Gas Dynamic, Mach 3/6, Vertical, Ludwieg Tube, and Discovery Wind Tunnels

• Specialized skillsets of particular interest include:

Skillset 1: Flow Diagnostics
• Ability to design, prepare, fabricate, assemble, install, modify, checkout, maintain, calibrate, operate, analyze and tear down activities associated with various flow diagnostic systems as well as document those efforts. These systems are typically comprised of Pressure Sensitive Paint (PSP), Particle Imaging Velocimetry (PIV), Schleiren, Shack-Hartman and Temperature Sensitive Paint (TSP) techniques.
• Familiarity with the state-of-the-art for new types of flow diagnostic techniques or methodologies which could be utilized on AFRL/RQVX test programs.

Skillset 2: Test Operations
• Ability to operate AFRL/RQVX testing systems and/or their component parts, utilizing standard and advanced techniques for testing aerospace vehicles and subsystems.
• Ability to direct and coordinate the technical activities of a team of engineering specialists, including ability to communicate clearly, concisely and legibly with the Government test engineers and support personnel via the written test logs for each test program.
• Ability to troubleshoot test systems in the event of erroneous test parameters.

Skillset 3: Wind Tunnel Operations
• Ability to perform design, analysis, preparation, fabrication, assembly, modification, maintenance, operation activities with various wind tunnel facilities to include: subsonic open circuit, supersonic closed circuit, and hypersonic blow-down wind tunnels. The Contractor shall document work efforts using Microsoft Office Suite and other software compatible with Government systems.
• Ability to interface with government engineers in the development of test methods, tunnel upgrades or modifications, and tunnel operations.
• Ability to provide technical supervision to assigned test crews through all phases of test operation.

Skillset 4: Data Acquisition
• Ability to design, analyze, prepare, fabricate, assemble, computer program, modify, maintain, operate, and tear down activities associated with aerodynamic research facilities and test data acquisition and data storage systems.
• Familiarity with AFRL/RQVX systems including analog and digital devices or systems for digitizing, acquiring, multiplexing, processing, displaying, recording, and storing data signals from transducers or signal conditioning equipment, plus instrumentation system such as thermocouples, strain gages, load cells, deflection transducers, infrared pyrometers, extensometers, accelerometers, microphones, pressure transducers, laser vibrometers, acoustic emission transducers, flux meters, flow meters, and air sampling or analysis devices.
• Ability to perform programming and/or modifications in support of specific or unique data acquisition, signal processing, database, sensor, data analysis, data display, digital image correlation, and data storage system requirements. Programming software includes but is not limited to National Instruments LabView, MATLAB, MathCAD, Mathematica, ARAMIS, TestSLATE, MTS, FlexTest Software, MTS TestWorks and HBM, Polytech PSV Software.
